Am I getting that old?!
Since it is Thursday, today was cooking day! Christian and Laurel from Seedleaf came in today to give the kids a quick cultural lesson on where different fruits originate around the world.
THANK YOU to Mandy and Laura for letting me spend this special day with Common Good!
Tell Me More About Common Good...
Common Good exists to advance wholistic community development in North Lexington through leadership development, education, recreation and spiritual formation.
Their Vision:
Common Good's vision is for our community to live into its God-given potential evidenced by thriving children, strong families, and flourishing neighborhoods. We desire that community members be reconciled to God and to each other.
Ministry Philosophy:
At Common Good we seek to live out the eight principles of Christian community development developed by John Perkins and the Christian Community Development Association. The eight principles are:
This program is what I attended today. Each day holds a different activity, such as tonight being cooking club night. Check out the link to read a bit more about this program, which specifically targets the
North Limestone, Castlewood, and East End neighborhoods in Lexington, and runs from 2:30-6:00 on weekday afternoons throughout the school year.
Summer Program
Common Good’s Summer Program provides a safe, supervised place for children to make lasting memories during the summer. The program serves Kindergarten-12th grades and is open from 1-5pm Monday-Thursday during summer break. or many of our students the summertime months lack structure. Childcare is expensive and unaffordable for the families we serve. There are limited enrichment opportunities for children and youth in North Lexington due to transportation issues, budget cuts for summer programming and program restrictions (i.e. age, gender, etc.). From the perspective of our students’ summertime can be boring, monotonous and provides little to look forward to. A lackluster summer break unfortunately provides too much free, unsupervised time for students to get into trouble. This is where Common Good’s Summer Program comes in! The summer program weaves together multiple elements: basic needs, education, recreation, spiritual formation and leadership development.
How Can I get Involved?
Volunteers are needed throughout the school year and are asked to commit to one evening a week for at least one semester. There are several components to the program and areas to assist with: homework help, enrichment activities, recreation, free time and a meal is shared. Volunteer mentors may request an age group to work with (younger elementary, older elementary or middle/high school).
Donate
Don't have time to commit? You can donate here. There is always a need also for classroom supplies, as well as items for the "store" where kids can redeem their "bucks" earned for good behavior. These can be toys, games, gift cards, etc.
The Christmas Store Program
This is a great an unique program held at Christmastime for the kids. It is an opportunity for families with a relationship through Common Good to purchase items off their childrens' Christmas list for 80-90% off of retail cost. Common Good collects "wish lists" created by children and their families, which they then purchase brand new and hold in the Christmas Store. The families are then able to purchase these same items at the extremely discounted price. Each family will have a designated time to shop as well as a chance to wrap the gifts they purchase. Proceeds from the store will go directly into programs for students.
There are two ways you can help! You can pick up a "wish list" today and shop directly from the list and drop off the gifts to Common Good (located in the basement of Embrace Church). Another way to help is to donate money and a Common Good staff will do the shopping.
Buy one of these CRAZY SOFT T-Shirts for $15! Proceeds are going towards a new drinking fountain system, which is much needed for the church.
