Um, wow. I wish I would have known about this place earlier in my time here in Lexington. I'm ashamed to say that I did't know anything about the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning before putting it on my calendar last month to come here. I had absolutely no idea, and neither did the two lovely ladies that came along with me today, all that they do! They are not only a part of the Gallery Hop, but have so much else to offer in this gorgeous historic building that sits next to Gratz Park. Did you know that the Carnegie Center offers not only tutoring and an art exhibit during the Gallery Hop, but all kinds of writing workshops? English classes? Photography classes?
....a nonfiction book writing class? Hmmm.... I'm getting ideas!

Anywho, back to today's project. Davis, Jenny, and I were greeted by Luisa, who let us know that we would be working on cleaning up the "Wood and Words" exhibit by Appalachian artist Minnie Adkins that would be featured as a part of the Gallery Hop tour on Friday (today!). This artist's pieces were full of folk art, mostly wood forest animals baring their teeth and sticking their tongues out. It was a fun little exhibit to work around! We were on cleaning duty - dusting, sweeping, and Goo-Gone-ing the railings from tape.
After we had this all squeaky clean and ready to go, we helped to set up the lower floor for a writing workshop while the ladies had some extra hands.
Thanks to Erica Cook and Luisa for organizing this and allowing us to clean up the exhibit for the Gallery Hop and sharing all that the Carnegie Center has to offer. Hopefully many are enjoying the exhibit as we speak tonight!

MISSION
The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning empowers people to explore and express their voices through imaginative learning and the literary arts.
The Carnegie Center provides tutoring for kids K-8th grade as well as a number of classes for adults, teens, and kids.
You can learn to write fiction, do photography, even do a "Gourmet Lunch Series" and learn over a delicious lunch! Maybe you want to learn how to speak Italian, how to write poetry, or write a play? Look at the Adult Classes
list and maybe consider trying one out!
If you have kids, why not try a Family Fun and Learning Night, or sign up your child for another one of the many classes? Here are the family and youth classes.
For a calendar of events, head over to their website or follow along on Facebook.
