- 1/3 comes from donations, 1/3 comes from funding, and the other 1/3 comes from actual purchases from the Food Pantry
- They are dedicated to supplying 1/3 of their food in the form of fruit and other produce. Though a majority of the food is packaged, they want to make sure to get those missing nutrients into the diet of anyone that is hungry. Food in the belly is one thing, but nutrition is also extremely important as well, they realize.
- God's Pantry helps to give food to 400 organizations (such as schools, churches, and small food pantries) over 16,000 square miles in Kentucky.
- The Pantry served 26 million pounds of food last year alone and will probably donate (I think I heard) about 28-29 million pounds this year.
There is a capacity of 2 million pounds of food in this warehouse. The turnover is extremely high--this food turns over 1.3 times every month.
Pike County in Eastern Kentucky has the second highest need for food per year from the food bank next to Fayette County, right here around Lexington.
"This Ain't Your Momma's Food Pantry"
- Alice Rogers, Development Coordinator
God's Pantry provides more than 121,400 meals every day for hungry people in Central and Eastern Kentucky across the 50-county service area.
Thanks to Alice and Lara for the tour and a fun night with friends while helping to stamp out hunger in Kentucky!
Tell Me More!
In 1955, a concerned citizen named Mim Hunt began distributing food out of the basement of her home to those in need of assistance. Through the years, this small effort grew into the large-scale hunger relief organization that God’s Pantry Food Bank is today.
God’s Pantry Food Bank is a member of Feeding America. The mission of Feeding America is to create a hunger-free America. Our network includes more than 200 food banks and food-rescue organizations serving every county in the U.S. We distribute food and grocery products, increase public awareness of domestic hunger, and advocate for policies that benefit Feeding America.
In Kentucky, God’s Pantry Food Bank is a member of the Kentucky Association of Food Banks. The seven Feeding America Food Banks working in Kentucky join together to maximize the effectiveness serving the state. The other members of KAFB are the Tri-State Food Bank, Evansville, IN; Feeding America of Kentucky’s Heartland Food Bank, Elizabethtown, KY; FreeStore Food Bank, Cincinnati, OH; Dare to Care Food Bank, Louisville, KY; Huntington Area Food Bank, Huntington, WV and Purchase Area Development District, Mayfield, KY.
